Radical Art Caucus Sessions for the College Art Association Annual Conference, Boston MA, February 2006:

Teaching Art with a Socially Engaged Perspective: A Roundtable Discussion

Session Chair: Beverly Naidus, Univesity of Washington,
Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Department

A few people from the activist art educators listserv will discuss how they teach activist art and respond to a definition of activist art that includes the following:

1. Working alone in the studio to heal one's wounds from sexism, racism, militarism, classism, homophobia, dysfunctional family life, and general alienation. Making art that examines injustice and looks boldly at suffering.

2. Working in collaboration to create work that subverts the hegemony by waking people up, breaking the trance, provoking - through culture jamming and the like.

3. Working in coalition with grassroots movements to expand their notion of cultural work beyond posters, banners and decorations for the movement - seeing art interventions in a more expanded way.

4. Working in community to facilitate cultural democracy by empowering community members to tell their own stories (cultural animation), fostering dialog among the polarized, making the invisible visible, creating an antidote to dominant culture.

5. Making art that celebrates what we love about this planet and its creatures and offering a vision of the future, providing a sense of possibility and hope to those in despair.

STEVE KURTZ CLEARED OF ALL CHARGES

Dr. Steven Kurtz, a Professor of Visual Studies at SUNY at Buffalo and cofounder of the award-winning art and theater group Critical Art Ensemble, has been cleared of all charges of mail and wire fraud. On April 21, Federal Judge Richard J. Arcara dismissed the government’s entire indictment against Dr. Kurtz as “insufficient on its face.” This means that even if the actions alleged in the indictment (which the judge must accept as “fact”) were true, they would not constitute a crime.
